The buildings were filling with smoke as well as fire. People that jumped did so because they could not breathe, or because the fire's heat was too much to endure. They were dead either way, and they chose the less painful method.

I saw about 6 people hold hands on the way down. I guess it helped with the fear aspect, but they still exploded on impact.
