Police Say Husband Killed Sueli Gomes da Silva with Machete, Brazil 2011
Sueli Gomes da Silva, 34, was found beside a road in Sao Miguel do Iguacu, western Parana state, Brazil, at around 6:00 a.m. on December 23, 2011. In the preliminary police version, she had argued with her husband from about 3:00 a.m. throughout the night. After the children left the home, he allegedly killed her by striking her several times with a machete. No recoverable source identifies the husband, and there is no recorded arrest, charge or conviction. This remains a preliminary allegation that was not adjudicated and should be treated accordingly. Her identification is based on the original report and a separate contemporaneous Brazilian femicide-tracking record that lists her name, age and municipality on the same date. Policia Militar, literally translated as military police, refers to the Brazilian state police force that recovered the body and does not indicate a military case. The original Portuguese term was facao, meaning machete, not facada, meaning stabbing; a later account inaccurately described the killing as a stabbing. |
