The skin on the aircraft is very thin and doesn't need to be thick since the support is in the spar, stringers, and bulkheads. I doubt even a 1/2" steel plate could withstand a bird strike at 200+ mph without bending.

bird strikes can ruin your day of flying for sure,.at 400=mph a 30lb bird may as well be flak or AAA.An aircrafts skin is no match.windshields and canopys are supposed to withstand bird strikes in most aircraft but not all are rated for that.esp small single engine craft.damn birds. |
