Pictures of U.S. Lynchings, Including John Hartfield, Ellisville, Miss., 1919
John Hartfield was lynched by a mob in Ellisville, Mississippi, on June 26, 1919, after being accused of rape. He had been taken into custody but was seized before he could be transferred to another jurisdiction. The mob hanged him from a sweet gum tree and shot him as thousands of spectators gathered. Newspapers had announced the planned lynching in advance, including its expected time and location. Mississippi Governor Theodore Bilbo took no action to prevent the killing. Afterward, Hartfield's remains were burned. Pieces of his body and souvenir postcards documenting the lynching were sold. No one was charged in connection with his abduction or murder. The killing later became part of the documented history of racial terror lynchings in Jones County and has been commemorated with a historical marker. |
