Some pieces in German photographer Patrik Budenz's series "Post Mortem" are incredibly wrenching to encounter: the long eyelashes of a girl whose chest is cracked open after an autopsy, the detail of wrinkled fingers and a pool of blood, presumably on a coroner's table. (He depicts similar themes in the equally grisly "Search for Evidence" series, shot in a forensics lab.) But others achieve impact sans viscera.

"A person's death ends his existence. However, the person does not just vanish. The body remains - the present shell of an absent person.

Before its final disappearance, the corpses is administered, inspected, investigated and handled and - through these actions - confronted one last time with its own life. Like a dying pendulum, the corpse alternates between swinging closer to and farer away from this former life.

This series follows this oscillation and escorts the corpse on its last passage along cold storage rooms, forensic pathologies, funeral parlours, crematories, cemetries, taxidermy departments and scientific collections of organs."
