Lots of ways to identify even a very badly mutilated person. Dental records, DNA... depends on how bad authorities want him to be identified, really, and how much money the government is willing to put into it.

It's the past tense of "prey upon" or predation by a creature. He was eaten by animals or more likely in this case, fish/marine creatures.
