For years, these photographs were circulated in a forwarded-email hoax said to depict a factory removing organs from bodies. That account was never plausible, since organs for transplant must be taken from brain-dead donors within minutes to hours, rather than from corpses piled in a cold room. The images instead show a genuine institutional morgue under severe strain, probably in a post-Soviet country during the 1990s. Visible are an autopsy hall where six tables are occupied, personnel wearing scrubs and aprons, a clerk entering case records, suspended scales and body bags. The facility, city and year have never been established.
