Okogbe Tanker Explosion Kills Over 100 Scooping Fuel, Nigeria, July 2012
On July 12, 2012, a petrol tanker overturned on the East-West Road in Okogbe, Ahoada West, Rivers State, Nigeria, after swerving to avoid buses approaching from the opposite direction. Its fuel spill initially failed to catch fire, drawing villagers and motorcycle taxi riders who began collecting the fuel. An explosion then engulfed the crowd. The Federal Road Safety Corps recorded at least 95 deaths that day, while subsequent totals ranged from 100 to 124; the state health commissioner said he had personally counted more than 200. Many victims were burned beyond recognition and buried in a mass grave. |
