They both look like actual photographs to me. I found it weird that his body was classed as unrecognisable too. His face is intact + clear of any injuries. Maybe they meant to refer to his body.

That description puzzled me too as from what I can see he looks pretty fresh and as if he's sleeping almost maybe like Simmone said his body had been badly damaged but his shoulders top of his chest look fine so odd one |
