Nairobi DusitD2 Hotel Attack 2019: Al-Shabaab Siege, 21 Dead, SAS Rescue
On January 15, 2019, at about 2:30 p.m., an al-Shabaab suicide bomber detonated outside the DusitD2 hotel and office complex at 14 Riverside Drive, in the Westlands district of Nairobi, Kenya. Four gunmen then forced their way into the compound. The complex was not declared secure until more than 22 hours later. The death toll was 21, and all five attackers also died. During the siege, an off-duty British SAS soldier who was in Kenya on a training assignment went into the buildings on his own initiative. He killed two of the attackers, helped civilians reach safety and was later awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross. Al-Shabaab claimed it carried out the attack in retaliation for the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital and Kenya's military presence in Somalia. |
