Re: Murder in Hotel [mexico]

This happened in Mexico in 2006. They were there for their daughter's wedding.

More than three years after the shocking murder of a Canadian couple at a Mexican resort, an arrest warrant has been issued for a suspect.

A Mexican judge issued an arrest warrant for Blas Delgado Fajardo, a hotel security guard, in the deaths of Nancy and Dominic Ianiero, of Woodbridge, Ont.

Fajardo, who has long been suspected in the case, had allegedly befriended the couple while they were visiting the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort on the Mayan Riviera.

On Feb. 20, 2006, the couple was discovered in a pool of blood, their throats slashed in their hotel room.

Fajardo, 39, had previously been a bodyguard for the governor of Quintana Roo, the state in which the killings took place.

In 2007, the suspect's mother pleaded that her son turn himself in to authorities, but said she suspected he had snuck across the U.S. border.

LaTonya Miller, a spokeswoman for the Washington bureau of Interpol, said a "red notice" had also been issued in the U.S. for the arrest and extradition of Fajardo, a Mexican national.

"Interpol Mexico is taking the lead on the case," Miller said.

The news of Fajardo's arrest warrant also clears two tourists from Thunder Bay, Ont.

Kimberley Kim and Cheryl Everall were vacationing at the resort at the time of the murders, and were initially suspected by Mexican officials.

Lawyer Eddie Greenspan said in a statement Thursday that Mexican authorities had issued warrants in March 2008 for the extradition and arrest of the two women.

After applying to Federal Court of Mexico on their behalf in June, Greenspan said the warrants were rescinded due to "insufficient grounds and a lack of any proper evidence against them."

"Blas Delgado Fajardo is the only remaining suspect, and there is now an arrest warrant for him and him alone."

Greenspan said the Ianiero family is pleased with the issuing of a warrant for Fajardo's arrest, although justice remains to be done for their parents.
