Yes, helmets are designed to protect your head, but if you hold it with your arm rather than wearing it, then don't expect that it will save your head in case of crash, especially in a crash with a truck.  Look, Stealing from the dead is bad, UmKay? So we won't steal from the dead. But we just remove his shoes so he feels better. Then when they remove him from the scene.... oh looky here, They forgot his shoes. Ok, I'll just take care of them until we can return them... and much later.... What shoes? See how easy that is when you do it by stages?
