Motorcycle Incident Perpetrator Found Dead in Police Custody

PHILIPPINES - On September 25, 2022, 25-year-old J.M.D. was driving on a motorcycle when he accidentally hit a child in Barangay Tugaig, Barira, Maguindanao del Norte. The latter was brought to a hospital, but was pronounced dead. Meanwhile, the former, who left unharmed, surrendered himself to the barangay captain, who later turned him over to Barira Municipal Police Station where he was detained in a police detention cell while an amicable settlement has yet to be negotiated. At around 6:30 AM the next day, the police informed his family that he died of "bangungot" (nightmare, technically sudden unexpected death syndrome). Upon external examination, they noticed bruises and wounds around his body, suggesting that he was beaten to death by police. As a result, 12 police officers who were on-duty at the time of his death were put under investigation. J.M.D. is survived by his wife and three children.
