Re: Missing Dutch Hikers in Panama
If you aren’t sere trained or at least know what is or isn’t consumable, what needs to be cooked and what doesn’t, and how to purify water and make a shelter; you’re likely going to kill yourself faster eating then you would fasting. Plenty of couch-survivalists have killed themselves rather swiftly by thinking they knew what was safe to eat and giving themselves a minor infection they couldn’t treat. Diarrhea will dehydrate you and kill you real fast and it’s easy to put a parasite or bacteria in your system that causes it. 11 days is remarkable because they weren’t survivalists. The best thing they could have done is stayed where they were, made shelter, and found a clearing to go to during the day for anyone looking for them. Moving around when you’re lost hiking is a sure death sentence. It makes you almost impossible to find and drastically increases the odds of accident/injury. |

Re: Missing Dutch Hikers in Panama
On the contrary, in much of the rainforest, there is ostensibly very little to eat. Unless the rainforests of Panama are vastly different from the Amazon basin. When the Royal Geographical Society started commissioning rainforest excursions for the purposes of mapping and discovery in the latter part of the 19th century, explorers - the ones who survived - popularized the saying that the jungle is a "false paradise". The canopy prevents much of the sunlight from reaching the forest floor, so vegetation producing edible fruits is quite sparse. Also, the plants that are there are highly adapted to survival in a warm, humid environment, i.e., they are insect resistant, which means if you see a brightly colored fruit, you should take it as a plant saying "yeah, go on, eat that yellow thing, bitch. I fucking dare you." The floor is also a literal hotbed of decomposition because of all the flora in elevated positions. Natural compost heaps abound, and you have to be very careful when eating rotting things. The animals, likewise, are mostly in the trees. There is very little you can get to without a gun. There aren't that many large animals on the ground. Thus, unless you're a Disney Princess and can lure in deer and tapirs with your warbling, your best bet would probably be to dig for grubs and watch out for snakes, spiders, deadly frogs, and anything else brightly colored. Jaguars, like other cats of the genus Panthera, have large territories (25 to 75 sq km per cat), so you're probably fine. Probably. Percy Fawcett wrote that, on one of his expeditions deep in the Amazon, his team was so near starvation that none of them remained able to walk, and as they lay on the ground waiting to die, a deer walked up and started investigating the scene, and one of them shot it with a rifle while laying flat on his back. Now, these guys were overconfident dumbasses much of the time, but if a well-provisioned team of explorers found themselves in that position, I don't think two Dutch girls have much of a chance. |
