Migrants Suffocated in the Hold of an Overcrowded Boat off Libya, October 2016
The Italian coast guard attributed a sharp increase in crossings to calm weather after close to 11,000 migrants were rescued during 48 hours on October 3 and 4, 2016, in the central Mediterranean off the Libyan coast. At least 50 people died during that period. One wooden fishing boat, overloaded with passengers, was found by rescuers from the Spanish aid group Proactiva Open Arms about 12 nautical miles north of Libya. More than 20 people had suffocated in its hold, while a news photographer traveling aboard the rescue ship counted more than 30 bodies on the lowest deck. Under Italian coast guard coordination, about 70 percent of the rescues were conducted by the coast guard itself, with vessels operated by the navy and aid groups also participating. Survivors were transported to Sicily. Most of those rescued and those who died were from sub-Saharan countries, including Somalia, Nigeria and Congo. |

Shame. Spread the word and maybe the scumbags will stop trying to freeload from the west! They're NOT refugees, just people looking for a western welfare lifestyle! |

I think if there were no war and their homes being no being destroyed, they would never had left their homeland. Those bodies look half starved and full of dispair. Most of those immigrants are good people. I am glad when my family escaped fascism and came to America from Sicily, there were less people with such isolationist views.

Tragic. To be fair if I was them, I'd be on that boat too. Humans are humans. We all want the best life we can get.
