Mexican police found 5 severed heads last Thursday night. The heads were put on the bonnet of an abandoned taxi in the violent eastern state of Veracruz.

The heads were found in the city of Tlacotlalpan, along with a threatening message signed by the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel. The torsos of the victims were found in black plastic bags inside the car and in its boot.

The powerful drug cartel is locked in a turf war in the area with another cartel, Los Zetas, according to a prosecution source who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The cartels are fighting for control of the region's lucrative fuel theft business.

The state of Veracruz, where the bodies were discovered, suffered 2,200 homicides between December 2016 and December 2017.

According to information released by the Executive Secretariat of Mexico's National Public Security System, 70% of homicides in Veracruz were connected with organised crime.
