Mexican Mummies
When I was in Mexico, I visited the Museo de Momias in Guanajuato.. The mummies are naturally occurring in a particular cemetery there, and were discovered by accident when some residents whose families had failed to pay the "rent" were exhumed to make room for new tenants. It's believed that the composition of the materials used in the crypts, along with the baking Mexican sun has preserved these guys. They were pretty amazing to see, here are some of my photos |

Re: Mexican Mummies
I know, there were some others that looked like zombies, they were wearing suits, but the lighting was bad and I wasn't supposed to take photos so some didn't turn out. They were pretty creepy! Baby ones were sad :(

Re: Mexican Mummies
Thank you so much for this! I'm taking a Spanish class and will probably show this to my teacher once we get to the Mexico chapter.

Re: Mexican Mummies
Glad you like them everyone. Yes it was a pretty cool place to see. I don't know if it's the same all over Mexico, but in this town they did have a system of leasing the grave, or crypt, and your family would pay a set amount every 5 years. Mostly it does get paid but I guess after a time family pass away etc and there is nobody to pay. Most of the bodies exhumed would just be cremated but the ones that had mummified were stored away and then later put on display as a curiosity. In the last few years they have done the place up and made it a lot more commercial. They have hundreds of mummies! I made a special side visit to this city just to see these mummies, but this ended up being one of my favourite places in Mexico. When I was in Vietnam I was told about their customs surrounding burial. They bury the body for around one year, then the family digs it up and packs the bones into a smaller box which is then placed in the permanent burial place. So fascinating and amazing how different cultures see death and the dead. It's not a scary thing. We went to the Day of the Dead festival in Mexico and this was so evident, they are not scared of death like our society is, I wish we could be more like that.
