In the ongoing and ever-escalating drug conflict in parts of Mexico, a statement was made in response to the perceived backing of a local Governor for one faction over another

A pair of bodies were summarily dumped just a few yards outside of the Governor's estate, in a part of town that is noted for high security and a strong police presence. A message was included, written on the bright green cardboard that the narcos seem to greatly enjoy. It was essentially a warning and apparently referenced the disappearances of two high ranking members of the rival cartel.

The bodies themselves were of a couple stated to be in their late 20's, though their identities were not disclosed. Both were bound and had thick grey tape wrapped around their faces. Both had been tortured while alive and the presumed cause of death for the woman was suffocation, the man a gunshot to the head.

The message was pinned to the woman's abdomen with a knife.

Dude, from the Aztecs conducting human sacrifice, to the imperial Spanish invaders, to the revolutions and savage political upheavals, to brutal agricultural land disputes, on up through the Columbian Cartels using Mexico as a highway, to the modern-day Narco factions as they are, Mexico has been awash with blood and terror.

Like much of the Middle East, the area is and ALWAYS has been a hotbed of turmoil and bloodshed and carnage. Sure, America's drug laws provide a fertile field to be watered with blood, but if the US were to suddenly legalize every controlled substance harvested or created by man, the Mexicans would STILL be cutting off heads and hanging bodies. It's so ingrained in the culture and locale as to be DNA coded as racial memory at this point.

And this from a guy who reads Mexican newspapers ever day, loves and respects their culture as a whole, finds their land to be beautiful, and is not troubled by their presence in his country.

It is what it is.

Much of what you wrote is quite true, Vedderman. Nonetheless, it is also the case that Mexico's current drug war is greatly intensified by the U.S. government's nominal War on Drugs.

Been going to Mexico, Baja, & TJ for most of my life... been that way since the 1980s... probably longer. The vast majority of the populace's attitude about it is not outrage, but "Hey what can you do? Its the way it is..". Things are not changing with a change in US drug policy - however much it is needed.

I used to live in Del Rio in the 1960's. My dad was in the Border Patrol; I remember going over into Acuna sometimes, to shop and eat. Whenever we had to leave the car for more than a few minutes, or even let it out of sight, my dad would pay the street kids to watch it. They would sit on it and raise total hell if anybody came near it, lol! And this is (was) a 'nice' border town.

America's so-called "war on drugs" is every bit as corrupt and immoral as the cartels themselves; albeit, not as publicly crude and transparent in their agenda.

Unless I've mistaken your stance here, since it is quiet vague, it seems you may be mistaken. The U.S. government does not want to eradicate drugs at all, we just want a bigger piece of the pie than anyone else.
