Manuel Alexandre da Silva, 35, was found dead near Assentamento Mulunguzinho in rural Mossoro, Rio Grande do Norte, on the morning of January 25, 2016. Both of his hands had been severed, and he had a cut to the neck. Military police attended the scene.

A police communications center had logged a report at about 3 a.m. that three men took Silva from his home and assaulted his son. Accounts differed over whether the son or other community residents later discovered the body. The body was sent to ITEP for a necropsy, and the homicide division in Mossoro investigated. No motive was given at the time.
