My understanding is the sudden drop in blood pressure quickly causes unconsciousness. The brain stays active longer, but in more of a blackout/dream state than aware of its surroundings. There's still undoubtedly a short amount of time thinking "oh shit", but it's not long.

Imagine being stuck between those doors, hearing the elevator going down... Maybe he died immediately when it hit him, but before that he may have lived an horrible moment... |
