Man's Dismembered Body Left in Street, Porto Alegre, Brazil

In this context, quartered means cut into four pieces. In bygone days criminals (particularly those convicted of high treason) were sometimes sentenced to be "hung, drawn and quartered". This often included emasculation and disembowelling as added bonuses. The "drawn" part does not refer to using them as models for art class, but rather the use of horses to "draw" them to the place of execution while fixed to wooden hurdles. They were only partially asphyxiated, and not hung to the point of death (not dropped), in order that they might experience the delights to follow. In England a number of catholic priests were subject to this punishment when they were deemed rebellious to the Protestant monarch.
