Jan 16. RAWALPINDI - At least seven people were killed and 17 others sustained critical injuries on Friday night as a suicide bomber blew himself up on being barred from entering an Imambargah in Chitti Hattian of Rawalpindi by the people deputed on security.
The suicide blast was so powerful that it shook the whole city, damaging the Imambargah, its adjoining buildings and smashing windowpanes.
"The target of the suicide bomber was hundreds of women, children and men who had gathered to attend an Eid Milad-un-Nabi (SAWW) congregation at Imambargah Aun Muhammad Rizvi, located in densely populated area of the city,” reliable sources, police and eyewitnesses said.
All the dead and injured were brought by Rescue 1122 and other rescuers to the district headquarters hospital and Benazir Bhutto Hospital where a state of emergency was declared to meet the challenge.
Rawalpindi DCO Sajid Zafar Dall also confirmed that seven people were killed and 17 wounded in the blast in Chitti Hattian.
An eyewitness told The Nation that an unknown man came on a motorcycle outside the Imambargah.

The unknown terrorist tried to force his entry into the Imambargah, but a volunteer, Javed Zaidi, stopped him.
Within no time, the culprit exploded his suicide vest, martyring Javed along with a policeman standing at some distance.
Regional Police Officer (RPO) Akhter Umar Hayat Lalayka, while talking to media men on the crime scene, said seven people were killed and 17 injured in the blast that took place outside the Imambargah.
One of the policemen posted outside the Imambargah was martyred and another injured seriously, he said.
Police, Pakistan Army and other law-enforcement agencies cordoned off the area, collected evidences and took body parts and head of the suicide bomber into custody.
The police also recorded the statements of the people present on the scene at the time of the blast.
At the time of the tragic incident, the whole city was facing loadsheeding.
The locals started rescue operation.
After some time, a heavy contingent of police rushed to the crime scene and cordoned off the area.
Rescue 1122 also conducted the operation, shifting the dead and injured to hospitals.
Pakistan Army Jawans also lined up on the blast place to guard the area.
Heart-moving scenes were witnessed at the crime scene as relatives of the dead and injured were weeping bitterly.
The LEAs and rescuers faced hardships in collecting evidences owing to rush of the people who wanted to go inside the damaged building of Imambargah.
“I was also attending the sacred ceremony of Milad when I decided to go home for dinner.
As I left the Imambargah, I saw a man stopping his motorcycle at the gate; and at the other moment the electricity went out.
The unknown man tried to breach the security in a bid to go inside when Javed stopped him.
The unknown bomber blew himself up, killing Javed and a police cop on the spot and injuring many others,” an eyewitness told this scribe.
Blood and pieces of human flesh could be witnessed everywhere in the Imambargah with women beating their chests and men weeping and condemning the suicide bomber.
At least five dead bodies and 11 injured were brought to the DHQ for medical treatment.
Sources said three injured were brought to BBH.
The doctors said the condition of five injured was critical and the death toll might rise.
