That's a steel bench with heavy duty vise on the top. heavy duty steel and he must have fell with the angle and down force just enough to break his neck.

thats not a nail. thats the turn handle of the vise. modified in length for easier turning. That thing is a steel workbench. Probably the vise is a table top mount type like the one below. doesnt look like the table clamp type.  |

The wound looks like he hit the angle bar leg of the bench too. that bench is heavy specially if it is the longer ones. we have a lot of the around auto shops and welding shops here. its specifically made heavy so that when they file and hacksawed anything on the vise, the bench will not move. and a face hitting it sure wont make it move before the face broke something.

Probably tripped and fell against the workbench leg and his head bent backward enough to break his neck. Or his throat hit and broke on that angle bar and choked on his own blood. Slamming a weight of one or two person against that workbench leg is not going to move it.
