Your vet had to work as hard as a future physician in pre-med school, taking all the same intense science classes. They had to bust their butt getting 2 to 3 times more extra credit classes, community service hours, etc., and compete for a lot fewer seats since there are way fewer vet schools. In school, they paid as much or more per credit for those vet studies as a physician in training, racking up anywhere from $300,000 to $500,000+ in debt. After graduation they had to take a series of licensing exams every bit as hard and expensive as the one physicians take. Then they had just as long of a residency (2 to 3 years), getting paid about what a physician in residency does (maybe $14K or so). Then, that's where things diverged. While the physician went on, got a real job, and started pulling in north of $190,000 USD per year, the vet got their first job making about $36,000 USD per year. Both have the same amount of debt, both have put in unearthly hours to get there. But now the doctor starts climbing the ladder and soon starts paying off those $350K in student loans. By their 7th to 10th year as a practicing physician, for most their loans are a distant memory and they are pulling in more than $250K per year, depending on specialty. And what of the veterinarian? Most haven't even started paying the principle on their loans. Unless they manage to open their own practice, they are going to top out at $60 to $75K per year, if even. Now imagine that stress x2 in the same family, and you can imagine what this couple was going through. Remember this the next time you visit your vet. Buy their damn overpriced dog food. They need that income. |
