Man Hangs Himself From Footbridge at Shinjuku Station South Exit, January 2020
At about 12:15 p.m. on January 6, 2020, a man in his 30s used a scarf to hang himself from a pedestrian footbridge outside the South Exit of JR Shinjuku Station in Tokyo. A passerby alerted police after noticing the scarf around his neck, with the other end secured to the bridge. He was in cardiac arrest when found and was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Police treated the case as suicide and said the man, whose name was never made public, had a mental disability. An acquaintance who had eaten with him shortly beforehand told police that he had talked about ending his life. The incident occurred at midday at one of the world's busiest stations, and bystanders took photographs that circulated on Japanese social media and drew criticism at the time.

Wow, he really wanted to make a spectacle out of his suicide. Hope not too many children got permanently scarred from seeing that.  |

Just adding lil background info on the suicide from the Tokyo Reporter: TOKYO (TR) – A man hanged himself from a pedestrian bridge in front of a busy exit of JR Shinjuku Station on Monday in an apparent suicide, police said, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Jan. 6). At around 12:15, police were tipped off by a pedestrian about “a young man man hanged by a scarf from a pedestrian bridge” at the South Exit of the station. The man, aged in his 30s, was transported to a hospital in a state of cardiac arrest. He was later confirmed dead, the Shinjuku Police Station. According to police, the man, who suffered from a mental disability, ate a meal with an acquaintance just prior to the incident. He then said to the acquaintance, “I will now die.” In June, 2014, a man apparently protesting Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s plans to revise the country’s pacifist constitution set himself on fire at the same location. He survived the incident. Known as the Mylord Deck, the bridge, which spans Koshu Kaido street, leads to the Shinjuku Mylord shopping mall at the station. Apparently your head literally comes right off if you hang yourself from a noose off of a high altitude. Either that's false (but I suspect it may be true), or this poor man didn't do it properly. |

If you drop from a height the momentum can tear your head off. Used to happen when they hung prisoners with a drop bottom. If you're simply hanging your head won't detach. |
