I've always thought quartering loosely translated to cut into pieces when describing the dismembering of a human body. Even back when people were 'hung, drawn and quartered' they would have their arms, legs and head cut off (or pulled off with ropes tied to horses and carts), so even then there would be more than 4 pieces.  |
