Re: Man Dies After Eating a Pufferfish
There are many species of puffers and the poisonous qualities vary greatly from one species to another and from one location to another. Some people in Florida eat them regularly without issue but they are illegal to harvest in the high risk areas that produce a lot of fish with potentially deadly concentrations of the toxin. It is very possible he had eaten them before or knew people who did and didn't think much about it. Very peculiar creatures they have a razor sharp beak hidden under their lips and can deliver some serious bites. I've never caught one over a couple ounces or been tempted to eat one. |

Re: Man Dies After Eating a Pufferfish
Tetrodotoxin is found in several of the silver-cheeked toadfish organs, including the ovaries and liver. This powerful neurotoxin, when pure, can kill an adult human at a dosage of as little as two milligrams. It is far more potent a poison than arsenic or cyanide. In the body, tetrodotoxin blocks sodium channels that enable nerves to fire. It kills because nerves no longer trigger muscle movement controlling breathing and the victim suffocates. The toxin can also induce heart failure. There is no antidote and treatment is to support breathing artificially until the body excretes the toxin naturally. The treatment is very successful, with many people making a full recovery. |

Re: Man Dies After Eating a Pufferfish
Tetrodotoxin is what the fugu fish kills with... it stops all your cells from pumping sodium... which will make all your cells swell... but most importantly it'll stop your nevers from being able to fire... even with an iron lung you're not going to make it unless you are strong and healthy as fuck
