Australia - This elderly male individual has penetrating head injuries after committing suicide with a nail gun. There was a 5 mm diameter defect in the center of the forehead, 4 cm above the nasal bridge, and immediately to the left of the midline. Another nail was embedded in the right temple approximately 3 cm superior and 4 cm anterior to the anterosuperior border of the right ear.

The two nails penetrated deeply into the cranial cavity. Minimal subgaleal hemorrhage surrounded the two penetrating scalp injuries. The 7.5 cm (2.95") nails penetrated the brain in the left frontal and right temporal regions. There was extensive subdural and subarachnoid hemorrhage bilaterally.

Postmortem CT showed the two nails that penetrated the skull and entered the cranial cavity. Based on the anatomical areas of damage the frontal injury likely occurred first. The nail entered the skull in a vertical oblique direction, passing through the left frontal lobe to enter the posterior ethmoidal air cells and posterior nasal cavity. The other nail passed through the right temporal bone to enter the middle cranial fossa passing through the region of the middle cerebral artery bifurcation.

The damage to the frontal region of the brain would have been potentially survivable. In contrast, the injury to the temporal lobe was associated with extensive intracerebral, subarachnoid, and intraventricular hemorrhage. Compared with firearms, nail guns have relatively low-velocity projectiles. Self-inflicted nail gun injuries to the head are relatively rare. Reports in the literature include cases where the individual has survived.

I can't think of any more puns at the moment, so I'll go back to wrapping ice cubes in tin foil, and tying them with little red ribbons, to give to the kids on Halloween night. That and arranging the sprinkler properly, so I can hide in the bushes and turn it on when little kids turn in to come up the walkway. And getting my squirt gun filled and placed up on the roof, so I can target the parents.
