Actually, in most cases like this what kills you is SMOKE INHALATION (which causes burns to the respiratory system), the fire (and the pain) comes after you are either just unable to move or already gone. Cans containing flammable liquid UNDER HIS BED wouldn't have helped him for sure, (and at least the can at the bottom-left WAS containing flammable liquids): if you take a look at the Physical properties of common solvents, you'll find out that the average boiling point of them is VERY low, while almost if not ALL them are flammable: the key is the boiling point because after the temperature is reached, the can won't explode, but it will loose its cap, then the liquid will reach the fire and will be consumed in a FLASH, having MUCH less time to spread all over the place, that's why the chair survived (which is NOT true, btw).
