only reasonable explanation that comes to my mind in that scene (if it was really caused by steel cable) is that the bus was being towed using long steel cable, then the cable snapped on the fore section and whiplashed. This china made towing cable is very popular here for breaking near the hook and the whiplash causes broken shields to almost any other damage within its length. |

That seems like a reasonable and logical explanation. I haven't been able to think of anything that would explain it, so I would say that your idea is probably correct.
