Majid Kavousifar Public Hanging in Tehran, 2007
On August 2, 2007, cousins Majid Kavousifar, 28, and Hossein Kavousifar, 24, were put to death by public hanging in central Tehran for murdering Hassan Moghaddas. Moghaddas was a hardline deputy prosecutor who headed Tehran's guidance court. The execution occurred at the intersection where the judge had been shot, and pictures of Majid smiling and waving from the gallows circulated worldwide. The Thursday execution marked the second anniversary of the assassination. Majid Kavoosifar was convicted of assassinating Iraqi Judge Hassan Moqaddas, who was fatally shot inside his car after leaving his office in central Tehran, Iran. Moments before the public hanging, he waved toward the crowd.

Re: Majid Kavousifar Public Hanging in Tehran, 2007
Iranian authorities publicly hanged two men convicted of killing a prominent judge, a police officer and a bystander in a string of robberies and attacks, the state broadcasting company reported. Flanked by masked hangmen, Majid Kavoosifar, 28, and his cousin Hossein Kavoosifar, 24, were executed in front of the main offices of the judiciary in central Tehran. The two men were convicted of shooting dead Judge Hassan Moqaddas in his car outside his central Tehran office in August 2005. The judge supervised several courts and specialized in vice cases. Kavoosifar confessed after a three hour interrogation to murdering the judge as part of a personal vendetta, according to judicial officials quoted by state media. He and his cousin also admitted killing the police officer and another man, as well as wounding three others, during five separate armed robberies. Kavoosifar fled to the United Arab Emirates after killing the judge, but was later detained there and returned to Iran by Interpol in May 2006. He was identified at the time by the Iranian state news agency as Majid Kavoosi. That's how they deal with armed robbers and murderers over there. |
