Lumad Leader Shot to Death in Valencia, Bukidnon

PHILIPPINES - At around 2 PM on August 23, 2019 in Valencia, Bukidnon, 45-year-old L.M.T., who was a Lumad leader and Bayan Muna (lit. People First) organizer from San Fernando, Bukidnon, was shot once in the forehead that resulted in her instant death.

A week before her murder, she received a death threat via a text message from an unknown sender. Also in 2011, she, along with KASILO Secretary-General J.L., received death threats as they led their organization against the deployment of paramilitary groups backed by mining interests in their communities. Later that year, J.L. was killed.

Her death was the 14th victim of extrajudicial killing in Bukidnon in 2019. Moreover, Lumads have been persecuted by the military since the rise of the Duterte administration in 2016, and some or most of them have alleged ties to CPP-NPA-NDFP (Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army-National Democratic Front of the Philippines), which is listed as a terrorist organization by the Philippine government.
