LTTE Suicide Pilot Shot Down Near Katunayake Air Base, February 2009
Two LTTE Black Air Tiger suicide-squad aircraft, Zlin Z-143 trainers loaded with explosives, struck Colombo, Sri Lanka, on the night of February 20, 2009. At 9:51pm, one hit the 12th floor of the Inland Revenue Department building, killing two people and injuring more than fifty. The other was brought down near Katunayake at 9:59pm before reaching the air force base next to Bandaranaike International Airport. Both unnamed pilots were killed. The Katunayake pilot's body was recovered largely intact from the wreckage, which still contained explosives, and he was carrying cyanide capsules.
