Lightning Strike Kills 7 Students at Kai County School, Chongqing, 2007
Lightning struck a classroom at Xingye Village Primary School in Yihe Town, Kai County, Chongqing, China, at about 4:30 pm on May 23, 2007, killing seven students aged 10 to 14 and injuring about 44 others, five critically. The strike, reported to involve ball lightning, hit the building's ungrounded metal window frames during a thunderstorm, and students seated by the open, glassless windows became the discharge path. The school, on a hilltop in what Chongqing climate mapping ranks as its most lightning-prone county, had no lightning protection, and three tall trees stood about two meters from the classrooms. State investigators called the deaths both a natural and a man-made disaster. The dead, five sixth-graders and two fourth-graders, were not named in Chinese coverage. |
