Liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp, April 29, 1945: High-Res Photos
On April 29, 1945, troops of the US Seventh Army, spearheaded by the 45th Infantry Division, liberated Dachau concentration camp. They encountered about 30,000 prisoners who had survived, as well as a train of approximately 40 boxcars containing dead evacuees transported from Buchenwald and the Kaufering subcamps during the final weeks of the war. Starvation, typhus and the evacuation transports accounted for most deaths at Dachau in the war's last months. Opened in 1933, Dachau was the Nazi regime's first concentration camp. |
