The last photo looks like he has some kind of melted metal or something like that in there. Kinda reminds me of the movie Terminator. Could this be why he was killed? This does look like the style of John Reece to me. Just my thoughts.

Almost seems like it grazed his head. Usually their whole head is mush after a shotgun to the head.

looks like a shotgun wound to the back of the head at a slight angle instead of directly to the head, maybe burnt from the muzzle blast catching his hair on fire?
