They usually do. It's a round plastic thing that you have to use the palm of your hand to push or hit with your fist to open. Some of them even glow in the dark.

Looks like she stumbled into the freezer by accident, it closed behind her. (I cannot see the door to ascertain whether or not it can be opened easily from the inside)

As for he shoe being off, maybe she took it off the pound on the door to try to get help, and since it was at night, there wasn't anyone around to help her. And she most likely passed out and that's when she froze to death.
