Katy Sanchez Paulino, Dominican Woman Dead After Chinese Diet Pills, 2012
On March 5, 2012, a 25-year-old Dominican woman died in a Santo Domingo hospital after several days in intensive care. Her abdomen had swollen massively, with press reports likening it to an advanced pregnancy. One outlet identified her as Katty Sanchez and another as Katy Paulino. She had reportedly used 'Reduce Weight Fruta Planta', a Chinese slimming capsule sold without sanitary registration, for roughly eight months. Her death led the Dominican consumer-protection agency Pro Consumidor to caution the public about unregistered Chinese diet pills and promise an investigation, though no autopsy finding confirming the cause was ever published. In December 2010, the US FDA had warned that Fruta Planta contained undeclared sibutramine, an appetite suppressant removed from the market because it raised blood pressure and caused cardiovascular events.  ·  · |

Well, at least the pills looked like they worked. Plus, think of all the money saved by not having to buy an extra large casket.
