Sometimes during a violent crash the g forces involved can cause a body to momentarily shrink, and the shoes can go flying. Perhaps that is what happened here. "knocked his socks off "

Younl can see his top half by the other body in the pic. It looks to be a fairly clean cut, my guess would be he went under the back of another vehicle, but who knows.

On second thought I think it was probably a sheet metal or wire guardrail, or perhaps a sign post or something with an edge on it.
