Journalist Zamira Bautista Shot Dead in Ciudad Victoria, Mexico, June 2016
On June 20, 2016, armed men shot and killed Zamira Esther Bautista Luna, a 44 year old freelance journalist and schoolteacher, while she was in her car outside her Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico home. Bautista Luna, who wrote for local newspapers including El Mercurio, was found with a handwritten sign attributed to a criminal group. Press freedom groups said the motive was never established, while the Inter American Press Association warned that such signs are often planted in Tamaulipas to discredit victims.
