Jose Guadalupe Covarrubias Ramirez, 59, was an investigative police commander with the Jalisco state prosecutor's office. Known as Comandante Lupe, he had served for 35 years and was nearing retirement. On the afternoon of January 19, 2024, he was returning home after running errands when, as he entered his Mazda in Guadalajara's Jardines de los Historiadores neighborhood, assailants riding two motorcycles fired handguns and long weapons at him. He died at the scene.

He was the first police officer killed in Jalisco that year. Casings were recovered from both sides of the vehicle, and investigators announced no motive.
