João Vitor Martins and Max Sobral dos Santos Killed by Mistake, Vila Velha
The bodies of João Vitor Martins and Max Antônio Sobral dos Santos were discovered on Sunday morning, November 24, 2019, in unused land in Morada da Barra, a neighbourhood of Vila Velha, Espírito Santo, Brazil. Both men had been killed by gunfire, and their eyes had been taken out. Police believed the deaths occurred the night before. Residents said shots were audible amid fireworks during that Saturday's Copa Libertadores final. Investigators concluded that the victims were not the intended targets. While heading to a forró party, the men took an incorrect bus, disembarked in Morada da Barra and were mistaken for people belonging to an opposing faction. Neither had tattoos or a criminal record. Clebison Souza Santos was taken into custody in September 2022 in connection with the killings. Pedro Henrique Dias Vieira Ribeiro, 28, evaded capture until August 2025. Facial-recognition cameras identified him, leading to his detention at a bus terminal in Vila Velha. The charge against him was stated as killing both men and ripping out their eyes.

They both look so young, really just boys. They don't even have hair on their legs. What could they have done to deserve this? Was revenge or just random. A mother weeps.

No surprise, really. Eyeballs are some of the juiciest bits to nibble on.

Maybe they saw too much. Some criminals will take the eyes of the victims that saw too much or the tongue of a victim that talked too much. |
