Jerusalem Bus 19 Bombing, Gaza (Azza) Street, Jan 29 2004: 11 Killed
Just before 9 a.m. on Thursday, January 29, 2004, a suicide bomber set off an explosive belt near the back of Egged bus number 19 at the junction of Gaza Street, Hebrew for Rechov Azza, and Arlozorov Street in Jerusalem's Rehavia neighbourhood. The bus was travelling between Hadassah Medical Center's two campuses, and the explosion occurred near the prime minister's official residence. Eleven passengers died, while more than fifty people were injured, including thirteen seriously. Ali Yusuf Jaara, a 24-year-old Palestinian policeman from Bethlehem, was identified as the bomber. Within a day, Hamas and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades both claimed responsibility and named the same man.
