Jenifer Santos Matos, 16, Found Dead in Caravelas, Brazil, May 29, 2016
Jenifer Santos Matos, 16, was found dead on May 29, 2016, in scrub beside a cemetery in Rancho Alegre, a rural settlement in Caravelas, Brazil. Her nude body was lying face up and was already decomposing. Investigators believed it had been there for several days. Forensic examiners recorded a serious head injury that they said might have been caused by a blunt instrument, but no weapon was recovered and no cause of death was published. Police raised sexual violence as a possibility because no clothing was found near the body, but no necropsy result confirming that suspicion was made public. Matos was initially unidentified. Relatives recognized descriptions of two tattoos and contacted authorities. Examiners confirmed her identity on May 30 by matching a fingerprint from her right thumb with an identity document supplied by her family. She lived in Porto Seguro, and her relatives told police they did not know why she had been in Rancho Alegre.
