Re: Italian Tourist Murdered While on Vacation in Brazil
People need to realize it's stupid to put yourself at risk by traveling to countries known to be dangerous. America itself has dangerous parts and if you can avoid them it is best to do so. Stay away from hoods and from areas with high crime and dangerous people/groups. But we when dealing with foreign countries known to be dangerous being a foreigner makes you a target. And not just from violence by common criminals but also the target of police abuse. America is bad enough with many every year abused by police but there is a lot more recourse (local courts, state court, federal courts, internal affairs, state bureau of investigation, fbi/DOj, lawsuits, etc) avaliable to you versus foreign countries. Stay away from anything south of the U.S. maybe excluding Argentina. Stay away from Haiti and DR. Stay away from the Middle East and North Africa (even morocco in today's world is dangerous for westerners). Stay away countries like Thiland. If you want to go somewhere go to the Caribbean or Europe. |

Re: Italian Tourist Murdered While on Vacation in Brazil
That's awfully Eurocentric of you. I think a lot of the wanderlust/backpacker types go to places like Brazil and Thailand because they are less developed and less touristy. It's seen as more of an adventure. But less developed usually means more dangerous. Capitalism has quite a bad reputation these days, but it can't be denied that developed, industrial nations are generally much safer. The safest I've ever felt in a foreign country was in Japan. They are a remarkably well-behaved people. |

Until the Japanese throw you into a POW camp and work/starve you to death like they did in WW2. Ever heard of the Bataan Death March? And yes, the USA did throw Japanese into POW camps in WW2, but we treated the Japanese well. |

Well, considering this is 2015 and not 1944, I fail to see how Japanese war crimes bear any relation to a discussion of safe travel destinations. |
