ISIS Public Beheading of Man Accused of 'Sorcery' in Syria, Children in Crowd
Islamic State propaganda supplied the entire account of the unidentified man's death. His killers were the sole basis for the alleged sorcery accusation, reported confession, claimed trial and stated location; none of those details has been independently established. Islamic State did repeatedly execute people for sihr, sorcery or witchcraft, so such an account is plausible, but no monitoring group has recorded this specific killing. Search results can easily cause it to be confused with the most widely known Islamic State executions for sorcery, but those cases occurred afterward. The street magician in Raqqa was killed about a week after the material concerning this man was posted. Four people were beheaded at Mayadeen in Deir ez-Zor in June 2015, while the death of the elderly man in Al-Hamam Square was reported in 2017. This man was not any of them.  ·  ·  ·  ·  · |
