Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Pierre Levegh's fatal crash into the crowd and subsequent deaths of 77 spectators has been covered elsewhere in this thread but I've found a few bits and pieces that I don't remember seeing. The worst loss of life in motorsport history.... |

This is the first race of the New Zealand Touring Car Championship 1985 the 3-hour race at Manfield, held on 20th October. Kent Baigent was leading when he and Denny Hulme in his Holden Commodore touched. This lead to a major accident for Baigent in his BMW 635CSi as it hit the barrier hard. You can see his crash helmet flying off in the bottom photo. Kent, the 1984 NZ Touring Car Champion was lucky not to be seriously injured. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Louis Zborowski, Eliot Zborowski's son, driving a works Mercedes crashed on the 44th lap of the Italian GP in 1924 at the Lesmo, hitting a tree which inflicted fatal injuries. He had competed in the 1923 Indy 500, qualifying 5th but retiring from the race. The first photo is from a crash that Zborowski had at the Brooklands track in the UK when he demolished a time-keeper's hut and rolled into a ditch. The second and third photos are from the Italian GP '24. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Joe Florida crashed into the crowd at the finish line at the end the Vanderbilt Cup race in 1908. He knocked over an eighteen year old boy and then hit another vehicle. No one in the vehicle was injured and the boy recovered from minor injuries. It appears that Joe's car is shrouded in brake smoke and that the car he hits is pretty much in the middle of the picture. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
The 'Stanley Steamer' a British made, steam powered car attempting to break the speed record at Daytona Beach in 1907. In 1906 Fred Marriott set a record of 127.66 mph which is still the record for a steam powered car. Fred tried to break this record in 1907 but he hit a rut which sent the car airborn. It broke into two when it landed. Marriott was injured and in time made a full recovery but never tried to break another record. |
