Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Jim Cook's racing career came to an abrupt end when he was severely injured in a huge crash during the 1970 Motor Trend 500 at the Riverside International Raceway on January 18th 1970. His Ford crashed very heavily into the end of the turn nine wall and he suffered head injuries and broken bones. Jim was left wheelchair bound after this accident.

Cook was tragically murdered on November 29th 1983 by a male who broke into his Long Beach apartment and beat him to death with one of his racing trophies.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Once again, great thread all, The Dark mentioned Russell Phillips crash. Without intending to sound morbid, and not wanting to sound pushy or needy (cos the work you guys go to putting together these posts must be huge) I'd really like to see more than the grainy video of the crash that I have seen. If any of you have pics or better resolution vid of the crash I'd be one eternally greatfull sick puppy :)
Keep up the great work guys, this stuff is absolutely brilliant.

I knew I had some decent (not great) footage of the Russell Phillips crash

I found it today and remembered that someone had asked about better footage

Well that someone is The Myth, and that footage is right here

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Some Santa Monica Road Race pictures. These were run between 1909-1919 the photos are from the corner of Ocean Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard known, not suprisingly, as 'death curve'.

1. Eddie Pullen 1914 in a Mercer. This was in practice and he went on to win the race. He finished 2nd in the AAA Championship that year.

2. Johnny Marquis 1915 turned over the car and was crushed to death.

3. Lewis Jackson in a Marmon during 1916. The car wrapped itself around a tree and three spectators were killed, as well as Jackson who was sliced in two at the chest.

4. Walter Melcher 1919, his rear wheel collapsed and spun out of control and was fatally injured .

Due to the mounting death toll there were no more Santa Monica road races, a stadium track was constructed in Beverly Hills.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Piercarlo Ghinzani in the Osella Alfa Romeo in practice for the South African GP at the Kyalami circuit in 1984.

The car left the road at high speed, spilt in two and caught fire leaving Piercarlo with nasty burns. Later that season he finished a career best of 5th at the US GP.

Ghinzani win the European F3 Championship in 1977, the Italian F3 Championship in 1979 and created his own F3 team when he retired from racing in 1992.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Arturio Merzario spun off on lap 37 of the 1974 Spanish GP held at the Jarama Curcuit while in his Iso Marlboro and some how vaulted the barrier ploughing into, and landing on top of, a group of photographers. Suprisingly no one was badly injured in this nasty looking crash. Arturio had been running in 4th place at the time.

Arturio made is F1 debut in 1972 for Ferrari finishing 6th and continued with them into 1973 collecting two 4th places. He was a very successful Sportscar driver winning the Targa Florio twice and many major races outright.
