Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Mel Kenyon at the Langhorne Speedway in Pennsylvania on June 20th 1965 in a USAC race. Kenyon's engine let go spewing oil all over the car, racesuit, and the track. The car spun on this oil, hitting the wall, Mel was knocked unconscious. Jim Hurtubise and Ralph Liguori slid on the track and crashed into Mel's car which burst into flames. He was dragged from his car by the other drivers and a spectator that ran onto the track to help. Mel suffered severe burns and went through multiple operations at the San Antonio Burn Center losing nearly all of his fingers on his left hand. A special glove was made for Mel, the glove fit onto his hand and hooked to the steering wheel. Kenyon returned to racing in 1966. Mel is still refered to as the 'King of the Midgets' and many believe is the greatest midget racer ever, winning seven USAC National Midget Car championships. He finished 3rd at the 1968 Indy 500. |

Lap one, turn three of the Australian GP 1996 at Melbourne and British driver Martin Brundle launches his Jordan Peugeot over the cars of Coulthard and Herbert, completely destroying his car but walking away uninjuried. Brundle has won at both the Le Mans and Daytona 24 hour races as well as the Sportscar World Championship in 1988, he had nine podium finishes in F1. |
