Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

This is Jim Hall's career ending shunt at the 1968 Stardust GP at Las Vegas as part of the American Can-Am Championship. His Chaparral ran into the back of Motschenbacher's McLaren, was flipped and demolished. Hall was in hospital for nine weeks with multiple injuries including broken legs.

He is now a team owner.

Monaco GP 1985, Nelson Piquet driving a Brabham BMW tries to squeeze past Riccardo Patrese's Alfa Romeo, it doesn't go well, but no injuries.

Dave Saunders gets airbourne in his March 722 in a Formula Pacific race at Pukekohe. Notice that his roll over bar was ripped off, very lucky not to be seriously injured.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

this is the wrong thread probably to ask this question. but im wondering your alls opinion on Plasa's hillclimb crash. do you think he was mistaken about which corner he was in/ driver error. or suspension failure? im leaning towards driver error myself.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

This is the FIA European Hill Climb Championship 2011. Georg Plasa died in his BMW 134 Judd during the Coppa Carotti Hill Climb in the Italian Apennine mountains shortly after the fourth corner after a very heavy crash into a bank. Immediately after the crash marshals and spectators rushed to the car but it was too late.

There is video footage of the crash, it sounds as if the throttle was open up to impact, perhaps it was a technical issue. The driver was very experienced as seems unlikely he 'got it wrong', but we may never know...very sad.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

I have seen the Georg Plasa video footage of the crash, and for me it seems like a suspension failure of some sort... but thats just me speculating...

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

I certainly think something broke. If you listen to the engine it seems to be at high revs as it hits the bank which makes me wonder if the throttle was stuck open, you can see the car is turning but because of the speed pushes wide into the bank....

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Trevor Taylor, number two at Lotus and Willy Mairesse, an occasional Ferrari driver, were battling it out for second, wheel to wheel for the majority of the first 26 laps. They were so close that the nose of the Ferrari nudged the rear of the Lotus, knocking the gearbox into neutral, the car spun slamming into a telegraph pole and cutting it clean in two. The Ferrari crashed and burst into flames. Taylor leapt from the wreck of his Lotus and ran across to help spectators pull Mairesse out of his blazing car.

Mairesse was taken to hospital with burns and slight facial injuries, which were enough to put him out of racing for three months. Remarkably, Taylor only had a grazed wrist.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Yet another Mondo Style Documentary from the 1970s ripped from an old VHS rental

This time its one of Windowlickers favorite drivers, Jochen Rindt

This is footage of his fatal accident in Monza 1970

The grim narration and shaky footage make this clip very distressing

Its a nice piece of racing history though as the Mondo Style docs of the 1970s and 80s is what got me fascinated with fatal and non fatal crashes

RIP to a world class driver
